In Senior Secondary School, I ran away from studying Literature in English and chose the subject presented as an alternative: Geography. I did enjoy Geography, but I was never going to win any prizes for my drawing skills. In fact, I remember a crush once helped me with an assignment which was to draw a detailed map of Nigeria on a cardboard sheet…
I enjoyed reading Prose but I wanted nothing to do with the other branches of the subject-Poetry and Drama lol
Here I am, years later, voluntarily reading a Play. I don’t understand what’s happening to me.
‘The gods are not to blame’ is classic Nigerian Literature, and I completed it in a day. I already knew what it was about but it didn’t stop me from holding my breath as the suspense built.
To add more irony to this situation, my younger brother who used to torture me by following me around whilst reciting passages from this Play when he studied it in Secondary school ended up studying Medicine in the University.
Would I have become a Writer if I had actually studied Literature, or would it have put me off writing completely? Who knows.
I hope your weekend has been a pleasant one. I’m trying to decide how to end the year, writing-wise. I’m still in the tricky phase of writing things only for myself. Hopefully, soon, I will get back to writing and sharing a bit more frequently online.
Be happy, be safe.
